The Alfa Laval Octopus system is an intelligent “autopilot” system for use in sludge dewatering with Alfa Laval centrifuges. It monitors, controls and optimizes all aspects of the dewatering process – around the clock, and can offer savings up to 20% on dewatering costs.

The Alfa Laval Octopus system is based on advanced software that monitors and controls the sludge feed rate, polymer dosing and internal settings used in the Alfa Laval decanter. Its state-of-the-art infrared sensors continuously analyze process performance and automatically make the necessary adjustments to keep the dewatering process running at peak performance, 24 hours a day.

The Octopus system is driven by custom-written software that provides real-time information on each step of the dewatering process. It uses that information to detect and adjust for variations, keeping the entire process running at peak performance. Octopus also monitors and controls the suspended solids content and flow rate of the incoming sludge, suspended solids content in the centrate, polymer dosing rate, differential speed and conveyor torque of the decanter.

Octopus benefits:

o Consistent sludge cake dryness

o Up to 25% cost savings on polymer consumption

o Up to 2% drier dewatered sludge

o Cleaner centrate – increasing the solids recovery means the recycle load is reduced

o On-screen, real-time access to the dewatering processes

o Real-time, automatic reactions to changing conditions result in reduced downtime

o Opportunity to increase dewatering capacity by increasing operating hours
