Vacon, a global manufacturer of AC drives, was recently awarded the Environmental Sustainability Award of Wilson College and the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce, for its efforts at its North American headquarters in the Chambersburg, PA.

The new Vacon, Inc. manufacturing facility was completed in 2009 and in 2010 received LEED Gold Certification, which was established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute. LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the nation’s pre-eminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

The project, under the direction of Brechbill & Helman Construction Co. Inc., has resulted in 18 percent less energy use, 44 percent less water use and 96 tons of construction waste – or 82 percent -- diverted from the landfill. Additional environmental features include reduced potable water usage, reduced interior lighting power density, high-efficiency glazing and 24-hour programmable settings on its ventilation system. Waterless urinals and lowflow fixtures also were incorporated in the new building, which includes special parking for fuel-efficient vehicles and bicycle storage.
